A train dispatcher is employed by a railroad to direct and facilitate the movement of trains over an assigned territory, which is usually part, or all, of a railroad operating division. The dispatcher is also responsible for cost effective movement of trains and other on-track railroad equipment to optimize physical (trains) and human resource (crews) assets. The Masters Series Chief Dispatcher Conducted by co-authors R.B. Trombley, MMR and Bill Bell, MMR Almost half of the Master Model Railroaders have earned the Chief Dispatcher certificate. This indicates that scheduled train operation is a high concern of the serious railroad modeler. In a survey of MMRs, in which 14 dispatchers replied, 10 earned their certificates on a home. Are we feeling old before our time? YOU BET. Being a 'recent' train disaptcher (starting in 1979 to present) I can not believe the changes that our job has gone thru. Thank goodness there was still miles of train order dark territory on the WP?SN/TS for me to try to polish my Peter Jouserand skills.
I recall when the UP weaned the WP Sacramento office off of train sheets in the mid 80's I was working an asst chief's job and I made up single 8 1/2 x 11 train sheets (some taped together for the big districts for each sub), as the UP's computer system as we had it was not good enough to do away with something in writing entirely.
The only job I held for my stay with the SP in Roseville was the Coast Job, WR53, San Luis Obispo to Burbank Jct. Most of the time, it was all ABS, train sheet and DTC blocks. And it was a pretty busy line. You had to have a good idea of what trains you had where and when they'd be somewhere (i.e.- knowing your running times!)
Then I jump to the ATSF and land on the mainly single track Clovis Sub, before the job was split at Vaughn, and 40 plus trains at a time, but no paper train sheets. However, the Santa Fe's CAD was excellent, and pretty easy to keep up with as far as 'train sheet functions..'
I worked several of the ATSF Texas jobs where we still had train sheets and track warrants, before Digicon introduced their computer-conflict check system. It was fun once again to do all that fancy art work on train sheets.
Now, I'm a data entry clerk for eight hours, and spend about 70 percent at least of my time typing. Makes me feel old when I've dispatched in parts of FOUR decades now, and some of the people I am training were still in diapers / training pants when I started my dispatching career!
